President Girma Woldegiorgis in a letter sent to Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn asked for a statue to be erected in honour of the late Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile-Selassie I. “A statue must be erected to commemorate the Emperor…he was the first leader of Africa and I think he deserves a statue,” the president said during the interview. Ethiopian police detained twelve individuals today, according to the press statement from the Federal Anti-Corruption Commission. Melaku Fanta, Director General of the Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority with the rank of a Minister is among the detainees. His deputy, Gebrewahed Woldegiorgis was also put in custody for a cover up. He is going to be released soon. The identity of the rest ten detainees was not disclosed. Though it appears none are in the top leadership. Melaku Fanta was elected to the out-going Council of Addis Ababa city Administration in 2008 as a candidate of ANDM/EPRDF.
